committees ON …

There are four standing committees which focus on our role and participation in the world around us. They are our “Committees on …” which come complete with clever acronyms; they are CONSACT, CONCUR, CONTEAL, and CONSTUM.

The composition of each committee and their purpose are given below.

Committee on Section Activities

Committee Responsibilities:

The primary duty of this committee is to organize the workshop that take place each fall. Ordinarily this is immediately after the Fall meeting. This includes arranging for the presenter, advertising and promoting the workshop, and working with Local Arrangements Coordinator, Program Committee, and Project NExT coordinators. In 2020, a virtual presentation on teaching mathematics online was held before the academic year began. Other past workshop topics include: Using R package in class, Incorporating applied writing projects, Becoming a teacher of statistics, and Using primary source projects to stimulate student learning.

Committee on Curriculum

Committee Responsibilities:

The Committee on Curriculum maintains an ongoing study of undergraduate mathematics curriculum and other related matters. Conclusions or suggestions are shared with the membership by various means. Surveys of current teaching practices within the section have been developed and conducted, resulting in a panel discussion at a section meeting. Other section meeting panels are organized and based on trends or concerns in teaching mathematics at colleges and universities. Also, the committee is a natural conduit for relating CUPM guidelines to the section.

Committee On Teaching and Licensure

Committee Responsibilities:

The core mission of CONTEAL is to stay abreast of changes in K-12 education and licensure requirements for teachers in those grades, and to keep the section aware of significant changes in these areas that affect Ohio Section Math Departments. Relatedly, the committee strives to be aware of other curricular developments in K-12 education, and of Education department accreditation issues that require the input and assistance of Math departments.

Committee on Student Members

Committee Responsibilities:

The duties of CONSTUM shall consist of directing and coordinating all activities of the Section that specifically serve student members of the Section and students attending Section meetings. The primary consistent activity is coordinating the Leo Schneider Student Team Competition, scheduled each spring. The committee members submit contest problems with solutions and as a committee develop the contest. They also run the contest and grade the results.

The committee prepares any other student activities during the Annual Meeting. Past events have included pizza parties, Sudoku contests, and graduate school advice.
